7 colourful kitchen ideas that will amaze your guests!

When it comes to kitchen renovations, why not dream in technicolour?

At Rehome, we’re all for monochrome palettes: black, white and grey are fundamental to interior design, but what if you’re looking for something a little more personal? Your kitchen doesn’t have to stop at neutrals; in fact, that’s where the fun starts!

Colourful kitchens are so impactful that some studies have shown they have a physical effect on the body (for example, blue can make you feel calmer). There’s also an apparent connection between cooking and eating.

Colour can shape our expectations of flavour, with some going as far as to suggest the shade of your plates can make the same popcorn taste sweeter or saltier! So, apply this principle to your decor.

Think about the effects you want to create, then put our colourful kitchen ideas into place!

1. Rich cabinet colours

Nothing completes a kitchen quite like interesting cabinets. In 2025, Rehome is seeing a marked rise in rich hues, such as navy blue, emerald green, and even charcoal black.

A kitchen decked in depth might not be the most vibrant of our colourful kitchen ideas, but it provides a strong base on which to balance other, brighter shades (like magenta or turquoise).

If going in for a full re-paint isn’t on the cards, maybe start with a single bank of cabinets or an island (more on that below).

A row of deep forest-green cabinets paired with white walls is a classic look that pops up a lot at Rehome (especially green kitchens from brands like Leicht and Nolte).

2. Two-tone cabinets (and contrasting islands)

Did you know that nearly a third of UK renovators now mix cabinet colours?

Most often, you’ll see light uppers with darker lowers, with white being the top choice for the former and green, grey, beige, and blue taking the top spot for lowers. It’s a classic, fool-proof layout that works especially well in small or low-ceilinged kitchens.

If you’re lucky enough to have a larger room, you can afford to have dark uppers. But this isn’t a blanket rule. Sometimes, you have to let the light guide your choices.

Northern-facing homes tend to cool colours down, so steer towards warmer undertones (creamy off-whites, yellow-based neutrals, olive and earthy greens) to avoid a chilly cast. Southern-facing rooms can comfortably carry deeper hues or cooler tones because there is an abundance of natural light. We recommend sampling colours in person to stop you fighting the daylight.

3. Colourful and patterned splashbacks

When you don’t fancy getting your paintbrushes out, one of our more low-maintenance colourful kitchen ideas is a colourful, patterned splashback.

They’re one of the fastest ways to change a kitchen’s mood (and they work brilliantly with Rehome listings because you can refresh an approved-used or ex-display kitchen with one focused upgrade).

If you’re opting for traditional tiles, then pick shapes and materials that suit your cleaning habits. Ceramic and porcelain are, notably, easy to wipe down, so they would work well in preparation zones.

When it comes to colour, there are two strong options homeowners can choose from: graphic patterns in tile or colour and veining in a single slab.

Shaped tiles (hexagons, scallops) or bevelled metros are even better when you want pattern without heavy colour. There’s also grout: a contrasting shade will emphasise the laying pattern, and a closer match lets the tile’s colour or motif do the talking.

4. Bold walls and ceilings

Happy with your cabinets? Reorient our colourful kitchen ideas to your walls and ceiling. There are three main approaches: ‘colour drenching’ is one of the most popular, and involves using a single hue across walls, ceiling and woodwork.

It’s great for awkward angles and low ceilings, and while it might be bold, using the same shade above and around you can actually create a calm, wraparound feel. The second approach is ‘colour capping’.

This approach sees renovators building a tonal gradient that becomes lighter as you rise, or capping the room with a deeper ceiling band to guide the eye upward. Last, there’s the rule for painting ceilings.

A ceiling painted darker than the walls creates a visual drop (effective for kitchens with high ceilings), and one lighter than the walls has a brightening effect. It’s a useful tool when you’re balancing a bold palette with your room’s proportions.

5. Colourful flooring

We’ve looked up; now, it’s time to look down. If something about your colour scheme feels out of harmony, it might not be your walls, ceiling or cabinets. Colourful flooring can really pull a scheme together, and even better if it’s budget-savvy!

Luxury vinyl tiles are easy to clean, and work happily with underfloor heating. Plus, glued-down forms mean you can cut and lay tiles in custom patterns for zoning purposes.

Colour-wise, we’re seeing a big resurgence in chequerboard floors, not just classic black and white, but in coloured pairings. Terrazzo, too, is having its moment in the sun.

Paired with simple second-hand cabinetry from Rehome, these trends play especially well.

6. Retro appliances

Are you shopping for second-hand appliances? Do so with our colourful kitchen ideas in mind! Often considered ‘retro’, these hero pieces can be read as both furniture and appliances.

It works whether you make a statement with a large fridge or range cooker, or keep things minimal with a kettle, toaster and mixer in matching shades. With bigger appliances, just be sure to plan the fit before you fall for a colour!

Small electrics are the low-risk, low-cost way to make things pop (ideal if your Rehome find already has built-in appliances). This kind of mix-and-match approach is what makes renovation such a personal process.

7. Accessories and accents

If you’ve covered all our other colourful kitchen ideas, it might be time to look at the details.

What makes Rehome listings so great is that you can curate them around whatever cabinetry and appliances they come with (and swap accessories out as your taste evolves).

But first, we recommend choosing a simple palette and repeating it deliberately.

A classic 60–30–10 approach works well: let a dominant neutral hold the room together, then echo one or two bolder hues through accents, so that the space reads cohesive (and not cluttered). From there, put your colour where you’ll see it every day. Open shelving is a great way to do this: line up coloured glassware, ceramics and enamel cookware so they become a styled ‘stripe’ of colour on the wall.

Then, there’s the fastest switch of all: textiles! Tea towels, oven gloves, seat pads and a runner can carry as much colour as a wall. Just keep them fresh and wash regularly.
