How to Design Utility Room Shelving That Really Works

Utility and boot rooms make life easier. Is yours filled with half-empty bottles? Or has it become a place to store things without a home? If you’re blessed with space, don’t waste it!

The trouble most homeowners have is with their utility room shelving. You probably have more jars, dry goods, cleaning products and laundry than your current set-up allows for, and as your home grows, so should your boot room.

As the UK’s number one Kitchen, Bedroom, Bathroom outlet, we’re here to show you how a simple renovation can be achieved for thousands less than high-street prices.

Follow our step-by-step guidance on utility room shelving, or let a top-name brand like Humphrey Munson or Mark Wilkinson do it for you! We’ve got incredible deals on high-end utility rooms, some complete with integrated Samsung and Siemens laundry appliances.

 STEP 1: Assess the mess

It’s tempting to rush into buying utility room shelving, but slow down: the best designs start with a pause.

Conduct an inventory audit by pulling everything out and grouping it by job: laundry, cleaning, household backup, pet food, and the odd miscellaneous item. You’ll be able to take stock of what you actually have.

Then, measure the bulkiest items: things like your vacuum cleaner, the ironing board, mop bucket, and laundry baskets are the most likely to be relegated to an odd corner of your home. Doing this will also ensure that your layout accommodates the right height and depth.

Lastly, sort the items you want to display and those you’re happy to keep hidden. Utility rooms are practical, but it doesn’t hurt to keep them looking nice!

Cleaning products, pet food and spare loo roll are best kept behind doors, especially if children could access chemicals, but linens, baskets, and a few decorative jars can happily sit on open shelves.

STEP 2: Plan your workflow

The best utility room shelving doesn’t try to squeeze more storage in every available space. It’s more about placing storage where your hands actually go – similar to a production line.

Wet work first, then dry work, then put-away: when you plan shelves around that flow, the whole space is naturally less clutter-prone. Your ‘wet’ zone should be closest to the sink and washing machine.

Shelving in this area is best for products you reach for mid-task, such as powders, fabric softeners, and stain removers. With these things close by, you don’t have to worry about carrying dripping measuring caps across the room.

Next, the ‘dry’ zone: where you keep stacks of folded towels, empty washing baskets, the iron, and anything else you want to keep far away from the humidity of the sink.

Just remember: advice from the UK Health and Safety Executive stresses that loads are best positioned between knee height and elbow height, and that layout should reduce twisting and sideways bending.

So, keep your most-reached-for materials at a height between knee and chest level to minimise overstretching.

STEP 3: Open shelving vs close cabinetry: the big debate

Once you’ve done all the prep work, you can make the fun utility room shelving decisions. Going into 2026, we’re seeing more homeowners lean into a deliberately ‘industrial’ look: chrome wire shelves, heavy-duty racking, exposed structure and a warehouse-esque look.

Although chrome wire shelving is easy to clean for humid utility spaces, it’s not especially ‘homely’. At Rehome, that’s what we’re all about!

For some, visuals matter more than capacity, so if you want a cohesive scheme without spending thousands of pounds, it’s better to look for pre-loved utility and boot rooms.

Those with open shelving fall under the ‘country charm’ category and have much less visual bulk than wall cabinets. It’s great for the grab-and-go homeowner or those who want to see exactly what they have at a glance.

Closed cabinetry is better for those who like order in their utility rooms. We recommend solutions like tall cupboards for bulky, awkward items that otherwise end up in a pile at the bottom of your shelf.

STEP 4: Material matters

You’ve got the layout and aesthetic decisions in place; now all that’s left to consider is what your utility room shelving should be made from. In these cases, aesthetic preference has to take a backseat to environmental reality.

Utility rooms are harsher climates than bedrooms or lounges. With a washer and dryer, fluctuating humidity, splashes of water, and the potential for chemical spills, choosing the wrong material could cause shelves to warp within months of installation.

When you want a painted, built-in look that stands up to daily moisture, MDF is a sensible choice. It’s a material widely employed in high-humidity spaces because it’s made with resins that help it resist swelling compared with standard MDF.

The key caveat is in the name: moisture-resistant isn’t waterproof. This material is better suited to the ‘dry’ zone, where it won’t be exposed to constant moisture. For shelving right by the sink, marine-grade plywood is specifically engineered for moisture-prone environments.
