How to maximise storage in a small kitchen

Does your kitchen feel more like an obstacle course? In tight kitchens, storage needs to be strategic. You don’t need a massive floor plan or an extension to make the most of what you’ve got: just smart small kitchen storage ideas.

By looking past what your kitchen is and focusing on what it could be, you could unlock a world of ergonomic storage. Our tips will free up your worktops and make sure there’s plenty of room for new purchases.

Let’s start with the step everyone wants to skip, but absolutely shouldn’t: a proper kitchen de-clutter.

1. Start with a proper kitchen edit

Everything in your kitchen should have a home.

Your cupboards might be filled with so much clutter that your entire organisation system has gone out the window: that’s fine, but it’ll take a little elbow grease to get things up and running.

In compact spaces, you can’t dive straight into structural changes or buy clever inserts before you know what you’re working with. That’s why our first small kitchen storage idea is to take a step back and look at what you actually own.

Start by emptying every cupboard and drawer: yep, all of them! Group items on the worktop and ask the hard questions: Do I need three different types of spatula? Have I used this toastie maker in the last three years, or am I holding onto it ‘just in case’?

If you use something every week, keep it close to hand. If it only comes out at Christmas, it probably isn’t important enough to take up prime cupboard space.

2. Take storage up to the ceiling

Sometimes, small kitchen storage ideas don’t need to go out but up.

When floor space is limited, leaving that awkward, dust-gathering gap between the top of the wall cabinets and the ceiling is a big mistake: this is premium storage space! Capitalise on this by extending your cabinetry all the way up.

Opting for tall, ceiling-height wall units is one of the best small kitchen storage ideas because it creates room for items you don’t need every day (e.g., large serving bowls, spare glassware, seasonal decorations, or small appliances). Or, if full-height cabinets aren’t feasible, wall-mounted rails can make just as big an impact. Just be sure to reserve the highest spots for occasional-use items, so you’re not constantly climbing!

3. Make every cupboard work harder

It’s a common misconception that you need more cabinets to solve your storage struggles: you don’t.

It’s more about making your current ones useful. Standard base units with a single fixed shelf are notorious for creating dark voids where Tupperware and baking trays are lost forever.

But with small kitchen storage ideas, you can rethink the internal architecture of your cabinetry. After all, upgrading to deep, heavy-duty pan drawers is far more ergonomic than rummaging at the back of a low cupboard!

If your cupboards have lots of awkward, L-shaped corners, retrofit them with a pull-out wire carousel to bring your cookware out into the open. Even simple additions, like tiered inserts or vertical dividers, can be transformative.

4. Use awkward gaps and forgotten corners

Even compact kitchens have gaps between appliances or hollow voids behind standard kickboards. You can write off these dead zones, or you can think of them as untapped potential.

You can use these spaces for more small kitchen storage ideas! A narrow 15cm gap beside your fridge or washing machine is the perfect place for a slimline, pull-out larder. These tiny pantries are excellent for housing spices, cooking oils, and dry goods.

Down at floor level, replacing standard plinths with hidden kickboard drawers unlocks an entirely new space for flat items like baking trays, foil boxes, or folded step stools.

5. Get everyday items off the worktop

It’s hard to focus on decluttering when the surface you use the most is covered in random utensils and spices. Small kitchen storage ideas should create new space and make your existing areas more usable.

Don’t sacrifice surface area when, instead, you can install a magnetic strip for your chef's knives or mount a brass or chrome rail with S-hooks just beneath your wall cabinets. For smaller worktop appliances, think about integrating them into your cabinetry.

Many of our premium ex-display kitchens feature brilliant, built-in solutions, including listings from brands such as Häcker, Poggenpohl and Schüller.
