How to refresh a kitchen this spring

If you're wondering how to refresh a kitchen without a full renovation, there’s no better time than late spring/early summer. During months like May or June (especially in the UK) we’re far away from the early evenings of winter.

With plenty more daylight hours to spare, you can use this time to do a proper spring-clean. We’re talking decluttering, deep-cleaning, and adding special, summery touches to your decor. Ready for a seasonal shift? Stay with Rehome for our top ideas on how to refresh a kitchen this spring.

1. Declutter and deep-clean

Who doesn’t love spring-cleaning? It’s out with the old and in with the new in 2025, and the only way to get ahead is with a good old-fashioned declutter. It’s time to take stock of your space as it is right now: what does it look like?

What areas are the most disorganised, and how could your current storage solutions be upgraded? When you’re tasked with what to throw away and what to keep, ask yourself the following questions:

  • When was the last time I used this?
  • Does this item make my life significantly easier? If not, what purpose does it serve?
  • Do I have something else that can do the same thing?
  • How many of these do I really need?
  • Would I buy this again today?

Start with the worktops: having a clear counter will set the stage for the rest of your declutter. Remove everything that doesn’t belong, give your surfaces a thorough wipe-down, and then move on to the cabinets.

2. Smart storage and organisation

Managing a well-stocked kitchen is no easy task, believe us! But taking a structured approach to storage holds you in good stead. Now, it’s time to take each cupboard one by one: this way, you’ll keep momentum!

After pulling all items out, clean the shelves, drawers, and any storage bins with a vacuum and a wipe-down.

When deciding what to keep, donate, or toss, it's important to be ruthless and realistic. Dispose of broken or mismatched items (like old Tupperware or water bottles without tops) and donate duplicates or single-use tools.

If you’re contending with a messy pantry, this might take a little longer. But breaking things down into smaller sections (or enlisting help from the household!) may speed the process.

3. Let the light in

In interior design, spring colours err on the lighter, brighter end of the spectrum. You can go all out with your spring refresh, repainting your walls with blush pinks, pale greens, and sky blues.

You can also colour drench your kitchen across woodwork, walls, and cabinetry with a unifying colour. Or, learn how to refresh a kitchen with subtle touches, for example, replacing darker tea towels with lighter or brighter ones.

Swapping out your winter vases for clear or white ones is a minimal, low-cost way to make your space feel fresh. Even switching up your worktops can make a big difference: coloured vinyl coverings can improve light reflection tenfold.

4. Colour and texture

A kitchen without colour and texture variations will fall flat: literally.

But there are plenty of ways to make your space more dynamic. Your kitchen hardware, for example, what does it look like? Are your handles, taps and pulls all unified? Are some in dire need of replacing?

Something as simple as swapping out silver knobs for golden ones can add that extra touch of warmth. For a more dramatic change, you might consider a fresh coat of paint on your cabinets or kitchen island; deep blues and whites work well.

5. Bring the outdoors in

What’s more spring than nature? Bringing the outside in doesn’t mean spending hundreds on high-maintenance plants: biophilic design (integrating natural elements, colours, and textures into a space) can be achieved in several ways.

Add potted plants or vases of fresh spring blooms, like daffodils and tulips, to introduce brilliant pops of colour. Bring in fresh potted herbs; they’re a budget-friendly option that look and smell divine (plus, you can use them for cooking!)

Don’t forget about planters: a hanging basket works for all seasons, and you can set potted plants (real or fake) directly inside.

6. Accessories and styling

Sometimes, learning how to refresh a kitchen is all about the details. You want to be sure that everything works together, with no stone left unturned, and elements like fresh linens, fruit bowls, and statement accessories are an excellent starting point.

We touched on tea towels earlier, but these (and hand towels) are such a great, budget-friendly way to lighten a space. These soft furnishings, while mainly functional, can instantly add fresh ‘springtime interest’ to your kitchen.

Fruit bowls have always been a kitchen favourite. Fresh produce, like lemons, apples, tangerines, bananas (you get the picture), are beautiful (if they’re eaten, functional) centrepieces.
