Changing trends in kitchen design

Over years there have been trends in design, some continue in relevance, while others decline over time. The styles that grab peoples attention now, may be out of style by next year. In order to avoid spending time and money on a kitchen that will be out of style quickly, its worth putting in the time to try and produce a timeless kitchen. Over the years it seems that the simpler designs and trends tend to stand the test of time a lot longer than more extravagant trends.

Today we take a look at some examples of popular trends that went out of style quickly.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, keeping appliances behind doors was very popular, this however meant that a majority of storage space was wasted concealing appliances. This trend has steadily been on the decline, now reduced to have pull-out cupboards for smaller appliances.

Apron Fronted sinks saw a burst in popularity in 2011 and 2012, everyone wanted these farmhouse style basins, their popularity began to decline in early 2013 and by this point they’re almost none existent. The trend seems to have now shifted to stainless steel basins.

Kitchen niches used to be a very popular feature of many kitchens, alcoves built to house phones, mixers, kettles and other small appliances. With the decrease in corded phones and the more compact designs of many modern appliances, these alcoves are becoming less and less useful.

Trash Compactors were once an incredibly popular household appliances during the late 70s and early 80s, and while they do still have a niche following, for the most part these high maintenance appliances have all but lost their popularity.

Coloured appliances saw a brief spate of popularity during the 90’s, pastel coloured plastic was all the rage, but these days, they simply seem garish and Stainless steel has taken the throne. Due to the neutrality of the stainless steel, it has a long lasting, almost timeless feel that will prevent getting stuck in a particular decade.

Decorate range hoods saw popularity throughout 2009, 2010 and 2011 as focal points of many kitchens. Pot racks had a similar popularity for the same reasons but range hoods and pot racks tend to counteract with open plan kitchens and these days people prefer to keep their pots hidden away.
