Meet Elaine, an experienced renovator completing an extension on her latest project – a 1930’s bungalow in need of some TLC.
Luckily, a recommendation led her to Rehome! She found a German ex-display kitchen by Kütchenhaus with a modern aesthetic that matched her vision. Elaine purchased the kitchen BEFORE she built the room, a savvy money-saving move that enabled her to plan around the layout. She kept to the original floor plan and made a few small adjustments to the wall units (can you spot them?)
We went along to see the final result and ask some questions about the process:

Tell us about your project:
“I recently purchased a 1930’s bungalow by the sea. It was very dilapidated but had lots of potential. Having agreed with the architect and the builder on the look and feel of the renovation, the project began. From the very early stages (in fact, before I moved in), I had spent many weeks checking out the kitchens on your site, which gave me a good idea of what was available”
Why did you choose this kitchen?
“When I saw the kitchen I eventually purchased, (stored in my garage for over 6 months), I knew it had the style and design I was looking for. Beyond its colour palette and simple look, the design and substance of the kitchen proved to be outstanding.”
“The quality of the units, the smart appliances, and the craftsmanship is excellent. I could not have been more thrilled. To say I have a bargain is an understatement!”

We love the modern look of your kitchen renovation – can you tell us about the other design choices?
“My new kitchen now sits in what was formerly the lounge and the colours are grey, black and silver. I chose black walls which really makes the units pop, as well as making the space look very sophisticated. The inbuilt lighting in the units and the additional lighting I have used adds a fantastic feel to the space, both day and night.”
A glass cabinet is a key feature of this kitchen’s aesthetic, providing storage and a contemporary look.
Did you shop in any showrooms first?
“No – I’m a clever shopper and I enjoy shopping too much to pass it on to someone else!”
What challenges did you face along the way?
“I had one traumatic moment when my kitchen fitter was going to chop the pedestal unit in half to “make me a breakfast bar” – fortunately, I caught him in time before the saw came out!”
How do you feel now it’s done?
“I am beyond thrilled with the kitchen, its quality and its functionality. Just amazing. Big shout out to the team at Rehome who were a pleasure to deal with. Thank you!”
Elaine saved approx. £9,000 on the cost of her kitchen and drastically reduced her carbon footprint – at least enough to offset her central heating for the next 12 months! Not only is buying ex-display a great way to bring down kitchen renovation costs, but it’s kinder to the environment too.
