How To Make Your Bathroom Look Expensive On A Budget

Exhaust your budget on a bathroom rehaul, and it may be the last project you complete for years! Bathrooms can be expensive to renovate, both in terms of materials and fixtures. Rather than gutting out your current space, why not make more thoughtful improvements?

A picky approach to bathroom remodelling can be much more effective (and budget-friendly!) Simple changes, like upgrading your bathroom taps or replacing a tired shower head, can make an old bathroom new again.

Stay with Rehome, and learn how to make your bathroom look expensive on a budget.

Showerhead

It’s easy to pay little mind to your showerhead.

You might think of your original fixture, ‘It came with the shower, so surely it’s the best option!’ But not all shower heads offer the same experience. You’d be surprised how the shape, surface area and aeration of a fixture can change the feeling.

Brands like Westco and Crosswater Union are famed for their luxury fittings, the most famous of which is the rainfall showerhead. Commonly used in spas, these fixtures come with a larger surface area for a more dispersed sensation.

They are especially effective in larger bathrooms, where they can be installed via a ceiling or wall mount. Unfortunately, this means they’re less suitable for smaller bathrooms. But don’t worry: all is not lost!

Compact bathrooms can shop for dual heads: the most convenient, flexible showering option. You can switch between the main shower head and a handheld option, as they’re both connected to the same showering valve.

Freestanding bathtub

Nothing says luxury quite like a freestanding tub.

Separating your shower and bathing area can bring some real joie de vivre into your bathroom. But how to choose a product? Freestanding tubs from brands like Acquabella and Heritage can be made from cast iron or steel, two extremely heavy materials.

Before choosing a tub, you may need to consult with a builder or structural engineer to determine if you need reinforcements (particularly if your bathroom is on an upper floor). Once you have an answer, then you can select a style.

Single slipper tubs are characterised by their high backrest on one end, designed for supporting your back or neck during a soak. These tubs are more about depth than length and, as such, are suitable for smaller spaces where a longer tub might not fit.

Designed for deep immersion, Japanese soaking tubs have a narrow and deep profile. These baths are another great option for smaller bathrooms, as they don’t take up as much space as regular tubs.

If you’re looking for a classic design, however, the clawfoot bath is an obvious choice. Typically made of cast iron, this bath is elevated off the floor with feet. Their raised design is a classy bathroom staple that can make cleanliness easier.

New hardware

Giving your bathroom a fresh new look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Subtle, mindful upgrades can sometimes be more effective. Fresh taps are a great place to start, especially if your current ones are a decade or two old!

Bathroom taps can be purchased in pairs or as mixer taps, which combine both hot and cold water. The same can be said for bath taps. Options for these include filler taps, which are two taps connected to the same bar with a shared water outlet.

Top-name brands like Roca offer hardware in chrome designs, a finish that complements every kind of bathroom. Installing polished chrome and silver fittings throughout your bathroom can create a more coherent look – all for a lower cost than a full-scale renovation!

Towel rail

Again, it’s the little things that can really take your bathroom from drab to glam. A towel rail may not be high on your list of bathroom purchases, but it should be. Towel rails, like those from Roca, are designed to warm your towels before and after cleaning.

They’re a non-negotiable for those early-morning winter showers, where the comfort of a warm towel can make all the difference. Equally important is their role in drying wet towels. They’ll dry soft and fluffy rather than bundled in a ball in the corner of your bathroom!

Towel rails can also be useful for heating the bathroom itself, particularly if it’s small. Rather than blasting the central heating, towel rails act as a kind of zone heating that’s effective and energy efficient.

Simple texture wall/feature

An all-white bathroom can feel slightly clinical. While it’s great for brightening a space, too much of it can create a sterile, even lonely feeling. That’s why a customised accent wall can be such a treat. The right design can bring your whole room together. Popular choices include marble, stone or even mosaic patterns. Abstract geometric tiles in complementary colours can bring an element of art into your bathroom, particularly if you create the design yourself.

Other options include wood-effect tiles, which can counterbalance the brightness of lighter, monochrome colours. Wood can introduce a sense of warmth that’s especially important in ‘spa-like’ atmospheres.

Vanity & mirror

Bathrooms are all about pampering: it’s what they’re made for! Showers and baths are all for cleansing the body, but what about your face?

When it comes time to apply moisturiser or trim your facial hair, where’s the best place to do it? Vanity units are comprised of one or multiple freestanding cabinets with a mirror hung above the unit/s.

This furniture combo is an all-time favourite for luxury bathrooms because it’s so simple and convenient! It’s an all-in-one station for storage, beautifying and even handwashing (if you opt for a vanity with a built-in sink).
